lead poisoning Prevention

The Jersey County Health Department conducts lead prevention and intervention activities under a grant agreement with the Illinois Department of Public Health.

The JCHD Lead Program Nurse:

  • Provides in-depth education and counseling about nutrition and environmental interventions for children with elevated blood lead levels

  • Collaborates with Illinois Department of Public Health personnel in the process of lead abatement/mitigation in the home

Pregnant women and children participating in the WIC program are screened for their risk of lead exposure. Those at risk receive a blood lead screening by fingerstick, free of charge. Screenings are also available for those not enrolled in WIC. Medicaid, private insurance, or a $20 cash fee is accepted for payment.

If the screening finds an elevated blood lead level, measures are taken to decrease the level of lead in the blood and eliminate the source of lead exposure in the environment.
