The Jersey County Health Department conducts lead prevention and intervention activities under a grant agreement with the Illinois Department of Public Health.
Pregnant women and children in the WIC program are screened for their risk for lead exposure and those at risk receive a blood lead screening free of charge. Lead screenings can be provided to those not enrolled in WIC for a fee.
When an elevated blood lead level is identified, measures are taken to decrease the level of lead in the blood and eliminate the source of lead exposure in the environment.
The JCHD Lead Program Nurse:
- Provides in-depth education and counseling regarding nutritional and environmental interventions to decrease blood lead levels
- Collaborates with Illinois Department of Public Health personnel in the process of lead abatement/mitigation in the home
