Vector Control Program

This program has been in place for several years and is designed to monitor the disease producing capabilities of mosquitos. The predominate concern was with the introduction of the Asian tiger mosquito in imported used tires. Over the past several years the Department, in cooperation with the local solid waste coordinators, have sponsored a used tire pickup program. Thousands of used tires have been removed from the area since the service has been provided. A recent tire pickup resulted in several thousand tires being collected and properly disposed. The Department continues to seek out illegal tire dumping activities and seeks corrective action.

Of recent concern is the threat from West Nile Virus which has been identified along the east coast flyway. You may recall news reports of dead birds and infected people in the east. There is a concern the virus may spread west. It appears crows are particularly effected by the virus. Citizens are encouraged to report if dead crows are found. Handling of dead birds is not recommended. For more information, please contact your local health department.
