Private Water Supply Program

The private water supply program goal is to protect the people from contracting and transmitting waterborne disease. The services provided by the health department involve inspections of water supplies and equipment, collection and interpretation/analysis, issuing permits for well installations and well sealing, and providing consultations on well construction and disinfection.

Abandoned wells concerns us all. Open wells provide ready access for contamination to enter ground water supplies. The contamination may spread through the aquifer effecting other wells. A significant safety risk is eliminated by sealing unused wells. Many bored and dug well tops have rotted or been removed allowing direct access to borings as deep as 50'-60' or maybe more. This also is dangerous for anyone who would happen to stumble upon a well which collapses due to lack of upkeep or the proper maintenance, such as construction of the lid.

Information regarding private water sources are available from your local health department.
