Four Certified Lactation Counselors (CLCs) are on staff at the Jersey County Health Department. Three of these CLCs are Registered Nurses, and one is a Breastfeeding Peer Counselor. The CLCs provide specialized breastfeeding education, encouragement, and support to pregnant and breastfeeding women and their infants. These services are available to anyone, regardless of income or participation in other programs.
In addition to working in the clinic, the Breastfeeding Peer Counselor visits women and infants in their homes or at the hospital and provides telephone consultations to help with breastfeeding issues, especially in the first week after delivery.
The JCHD Breastfeeding Support Group is facilitated by the Breastfeeding Peer Counselor, with help from the other CLCs and the MCH Coordinator. This group meets every Tuesday at 10:30 am in the conference room at the Jersey County Health Department.
